MARVIN “RED” CORTNER

Born 1-6-1941 Passed 8-4-2024

Prominent Pueblo area and Colorado wide businessman. Red was preceded in death by his
parents Elias P. Cortner and Mary (Hawkins) Cortner, brother Ed, sister Loretta Wylie. Survived
by loving wife of 47 years, Linda; nieces and nephews Dan & Gwen Centa, Jodie & Ron Orr, Tom
& Kristen Centa, Jan McConnell, Peggy & Rocky Harlow, Ed & Shirley Arrowood, Don and
Suzanne Arrowood, Becky & Hugh Clausen, Cynthia Burton, Kathy Smith, Lori & Bob Smith,
numerous great-nieces and nephews and many many friends.
Red was born and raised in Pueblo, Colorado, he worked at the family and neighbor’s dairy
farms starting as a very young child. In his early years rode his horse to school with his brother
while he attended the old Nicholson School, Vineland Junior High School, and graduated in
1958 from Pueblo County High School with perfect attendance for 12 years. He attended
Pueblo Junior College and Colorado State University Ft. Collins, and graduated with Bachelor of
Science and Master degrees in 1962.
Red taught agriculture at Southern Colorado State College (now CSU-Pueblo) until his Army
Reserve Unit was called to Viet Nam. He then worked buying and selling cattle and was in the
beer business in Pueblo and Denver, founded and operated Steak & Eggs Restaurant in Pueblo.
Red then worked and invested in the northwest Colorado in the Steamboat Springs and Craig
areas. He managed the 250,000-acre Cross Mountain Ranch in Moffat and Routt counties. Red
and a partner developed a subdivision, operated a Nursing Home, operated a Furniture Store in
Craig, Co. for 12 years and bought and sold sheep. In 2016 he and Linda returned to Pueblo.
Special thanks are given to Jodie Orr, Keli Orr and Timothy Watkins for their special care during
Red’s illness. Graveside committal, 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at Imperial Memorial Gardens, followed by memorial service, 10:30 a.m. in the Montgomery & Steward Funeral Chapel. Donations may be made to Avondale United Methodist Church.

    We are so sorry for your loss. I have so many memories of Uncle Red. I remember the restaurant and when you guys cooked the delicious food for our wedding. He was quite the entrepreneur and he will be missed.
