John Vucetich, 99, of Walsenburg, CO, passed away on May 28, 2024, in Walsenburg, where he was born. He was a proud cattle rancher and spent lots of time tending to his ranch, raising sheep, hogs, and cows, and watching his children grow. He was a loving father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
John served in the United States Army from February 1944 to December 1945 as a Rifleman in the 30th Infantry Division. During that time, he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in battle. After his military service, he returned to Walsenburg to help on the family ranch, eventually taking the helm. In addition to ranching, John enjoyed hobbies such as reading, playing bingo, cooking, baking, and sharing his life’s stories.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, John and Anna; wife, Francis; sisters, Dorothy, Mary, and Anna; and son, James (Joe).
John is survived by a host of family and friends who miss him dearly.
A funeral mass will be offered on Saturday, June 8th at 10 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Walsenburg, CO, followed by interment at the Masonic Cemetery in Walsenburg. The Montgomery & Steward Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.
John was known for his kind and welcoming nature; he never met a stranger and ensured everyone had a seat at his kitchen table where no one went hungry. His storytelling abilities and love for his ranch, family, and community endeared him to many, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

It was an honor to know Mr. Vucetich. He was and always will be a hero to so many. His kind smile, words and love for chili will always be etched in my memory. More importantly, his dedication to his family and country. He served both with all he had. I am a better person for knowing John. Thank you for your sacrifice, bingo will not be the same without you.
