Born in: Sedwick County, Kansas
Resided in: Rye, Colorado

Dorothy Jean Ohlsen (nee Miers) passed away on June 22, 2024 at her home at Bonaventure of Pueblo.  Dorothy was born April 10, 1925 on the family farm in rural Sedgwick County, Kansas, to Carrie and Henry Miers.  Dorothy was the youngest of 3 siblings, her brother Clarence and sister Velma preceded her in death.  Dorothy was married for nearly 74 years to Robert Lee Ohlsen, who died in 2017.  Dorothy leaves behind her 3 children, Joel, Leanne, and Mark, 5 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  Dorothy was a committed Christian, and saw everyone she met through that lens.  She was loved by many, and she loved many more.  For many years she was the organist/pianist for several churches in the Greenhorn Valley, where she and her husband lived for more than 25 years. After moving to Bonaventure she continued to play the piano for pure enjoyment, despite fairly profound hearing loss and visual impairment.  In 2023 she was selected as the Silver Queen of Pueblo and Southeast Colorado, an honor she was reticent to accept but surely deserved.  She was always concerned with the well-being of her neighbors and friends.  She had a remarkable sense of humor, which she maintained until the end.  Dorothy will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Guestbook

  1. My deepest sympathy to your family. Your parents were lovely people. I am Laveta Brunn Horner and grew up in Furley. My mother was an Eilert. I knew your parents and remember riding on the Whitewater school bus with Joel and probably Leann. I had a couple of correspondence with your mother due to me compiling the alumni directory for Whitewater High School.

  2. Dr. Ohlsen, Mark and Leighann, I’m sorry to hear of Dorothy’s death. She will be missed by all who loved her. She told me several times she was ready whenever the “Lord” was ready for her. We shared a friendship I will always cherish.

  3. Sorry for your loss. My parents — Austin and Starling Bradley — enjoyed the friendship with Bob and Dorothy at Bonaventure.
