Celebration of Life:

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye, for now, to our beloved Mary Ann Ottino-Sternal of Pueblo West, CO who passed away on January 12, 2025, just one month after she completed her 74th trip around the sun.

MaryAnn was born December 3, 1950, in Pueblo, CO to John and Mary Ottino (née Micalone), first generation immigrants from Italy who instilled their strong values of hard work, faith, and family into their seven children. Mary Ann was the feisty fourth child sandwiched between her elder siblings, Adeline Griffin (deceased), Carolyn (Vince) Linden, John (Linda) Ottino and younger siblings Madlyn (Don) Reeves, Barbara Tulley, and Jim (Barb) Ottino. She grew up to cultivate special and unique relationships with all of them that extended to each of their children- and their children’s children. Dubbed the “nightingale” by her uncle Joe Micalone, she distinguished herself as the family songbird, singing and teaching herself to play the piano at a young age, aided by her talented uncle Joe Ottino.

MaryAnn attended St. Leander’s Catholic School grades 1 – 8 and graduated from East High School, class of 1968, where she was a fixture in the elite Les Jongleurs choir, crowned the Homecoming Queen, and made lifelong friendships.  She married her high-school sweetheart in 1969 and this union produced her two daughters; Stephanie (Dan) Smith and Emily (Bryan Williams) Booth, who she loved beyond measure.

While raising her daughters, she worked for Mountain Bell (later US West) as both an operator and in the mail room. She navigated the complications of life with all the challenges and choices that impact a life’s direction, but her value of family, friendships, and boundless love never wavered.

In 1987, she married Lee Sternal. For 37 years they lived in their beautiful home in Pueblo West built by her brother Jim.  During this chapter, she was finally free to pursue her vast creative, intellectual, and spiritual interests and she did so with gusto! She took courses at the university, attended workshops and retreats, and enthusiastically engaged in searches to explore her faith, deepen her understanding of her inner self, and satisfy her love of learning and wonder. The bookshelves of her home were filled with volumes she voraciously read, tagged, and made notes in. Her favorite topics ranged from history, art, politics, theology, philosophy, self-reflection, and the complexity of the human condition.

During this chapter, she also became passionately devoted to the loves of her life, her “soul pups” Twist, Minnie, Link, and Ozzy.  She walked hundreds of miles on the trails behind her home and along the neighborhood streets pondering the “big” questions… always accompanied by her beloved pups, and often by dear friends.

MaryAnn kept her home and yard to an impeccable standard of beauty and engaged in community volunteer activities that aligned with her passions, interests, and giving nature.  She shared her time serving on multiple community boards including Paws for Life Animal Shelter and numerous other volunteer endeavors in the greater Pueblo community. One of her favorites was bringing her exceptional companion, Minnie, her spunky miniature schnauzer, for pet therapy to the Colorado State Hospital and various senior care/living facilities in Pueblo.

Playing the piano and singing were some of her most memorable talents.  She loved to share her beautiful voice and self-taught piano skills whenever she could. Whether it was serving as a cantor at Christ the King church, singing for both weddings and funerals, or simply for her personal pleasure at her upright piano in a dedicated room of her home, music was a central part of her life and legacy. There was rarely a family occasion that didn’t include her singing and playing while we all gathered around the piano to listen and sing along.

For all who were blessed to meet her during her wonderful and complicated journey, the world feels a little less bright without the radiance that shined from her movie-star smile and the inexhaustible well of love in her heart. She simultaneously valued the earth-bound human connections that filled her days while pondering the esoteric questions concerning the true meaning of life and the importance of spiritual awakening that filled her soul. A difficult but fulfilling endeavor.

Attempting to encapsulate the essence and existence of a woman who meant so much to so many is an insurmountable undertaking. She made friends wherever she went, from every walk of life, in every environment. Over the past two years of her life, the circle of the love and care she provided others was returned by her daughters, family and friends; her miracle stray kitty companion, Jack; and a team of extraordinary women– Tuesday, Geo, Haley, and Aeron– who shared their skills and hearts on a level that is difficult to articulate. They provided incredible kindness, care, and understanding during this very difficult final chapter.

MaryAnn was a self-described dreamer.  She searched and pondered her purpose and was affected, inspired, and deeply concerned by the events that happened to others within her family, her community, and around the world.  She will be remembered for her exceptional beauty, her angelic voice, her sweet and giving nature, and most of all for her genuine interest, love, and gratitude for her family, friends, animals, and humanity.

  5. From Barbara Tully, beloved little sister:

MaryAnn was my strength! She was the angel in my life from the time I was a little girl. She always showed love and support during the darkest times of my life.

Maryann helped me become a checker at Safeway- which was my dream; She always had my back, and she was the one who made it happen. Without her, this would never have happened and it gave me a life of my own. I cried thinking it would never happen, but she helped put me in an environment that allowed me to be successful.

She also saved my life and stayed by my side when I had a serious health crisis and lost my husband and son.

MaryAnn’s love is her legacy and without her I would not have the life I have today. She was always loving and supportive in every way.

    I love you sister.
    Barbara

Although we argued from time time we never let that get in the way of our relationship.

The last time she felt able to drive her car to my house she put her hands on my shoulders and said “I will always love you from the depth of my heart”.

  6. My deepest sympathy to Lee Sternal and the Otttino family members. We have known each other for over four decades and will miss this dear friend, her lovely smile and engaging manner. We have been blessed to be part of her journey.

  7. CandleImageExtraordinary woman, you made room for me in your home and built a place for yourself in my heart. So many memories come to mind: our talks in the kitchen, you singing and playing the piano, the cookies you baked, the brightness of your eyes during Stephanie’s and Emily’s performances, your beautiful voice (and Emily’s) as a gift at my wedding, your care for those in need, the joyful days, and how the sad ones made you stronger, inspiring you to fight back with more love. Thank you for letting us into your life and for showing that love, in all its forms, is the most powerful force we possess.
    Your Spanish son.
All my love to Lee, Stephanie and Emily.

    • Oh Javier, thank you so much for this beautiful post. It was such a gift to talk with you the other day. She loved you and Alberto so much. Your memories with brought back a flood of my own.

      Lots of love to you,
      Emily

  9. CandleImageMy dear friend, you will be so missed. We’ve been great friends for over 35 years. There was rarely a week that went by that we didn’t get together to solve the problems of the world or take our puppies for a walk. We shared our love for animals. I hope you are with Twist, Link, Minnie and Ossie. Even in our many visits throughout your illness you were the same sweet, caring friend. Rest in peace.

  10. And of course, my true condolences to my wonderful sisters Emily and Stephanie and to my dear Lee. I wish I could be there with you all to rejoice and mourn in her memory.

    • Thank you my brother. Between yours and Javier’s posts,I have had a steady stream of tears running down my face all morning (the good kind).

I don’t think I’ve ever seen her laugh so often or so loudly as when you were there. Thank you for all the laughs and love that you gave her (and maybe a few gray hairs too!) of course I am sure I was responsible for a lot more grays, though.

Love and hugs to you always!

  11. CandleImageMaryann, my beloved “step- mother” from my exchange student year in Colorado. So many great memories around your piano, the warmth of your kitchen stove, the freshness of your cared garden that preluded amazing walks and deep conversations along those multiple paths that surround your beautiful house. They all take me to the kindness of your heart and the beauty of your soul. We will meet again once the veil is lifted. Love. ❤️

  12. CandleImageAfter reading the obituary written by Mary Ann’s daughters, Stephanie and Emily, I find myself at a loss of what more I could possibly add. What is obvious, is the love and admiration her daughters have for her. In revieing posted comments, it is also obvious that Mary Ann was loved and admired by many others she crossed paths with during her 74 years of life. And I can say as her “big brother” it is well deserved and not exaggerated. So, what I’ll do is tell a story about how she was “feisty” (one of the many descriptions listed of her in the obituary) even at a very young age. I can’t remember my exact age, but I decided to experiment with smoking cigarettes. Well, Mary Ann caught me and decided to capitalize on this information. She told me that unless I started doing her household chores like washing and drying dishes, emptying the trash, dusting, vacuuming, etc., she would tell mom and dad what I was doing. After doing double duty chores around the house for a couple weeks, I finally decided it wasn’t worth it. So, my folks found out, I got in trouble and Mary Ann had to start doing her share around the house again. Actually, I owe her a big thank you, because after getting in trouble, I never smoked again. Thank you, Mary Ann! Rest in peace!

    • Johnny,

What a beautiful post and thank you so much for your kind words about the write up. We wanted to make sure we didn’t miss anything about her. She deserved nothing less.

I also had to chuckle about the cigarettes story. Steph said she didn’t know that, but I definitely did! She was definitely feisty when she wanted to be!
      Love you,
      Emily

  13. To Stephanie and Emily, my condolences to you. Losing your mother, sweet Mary Ann
will be the hardest thing to go through. Please mourn her no matter where you are. It helps heal that terrible hole in your heart.
I knew your mom many years ago. And I remember how Madlyn and I would try to sing with her. But her beautiful voice overpowered us. Your mom, so kind and beautiful will be in my prayers and in my heart.
The last time I saw your mom was in Lone Tree,CO. She and Madlyn came to see me. And it was just like we’d see each other yesterday. I will remember that visit and your dear mom forever.
And Lee, my condolences to you also.

Maryann, you will be sorely missed. Rest in peace.

    • Judy,

Thank you for your sincere kindness.
I remember how many great memories she had with you.

      Sincerely,
      Emily
